Workshop Report: Clinical Data Management Training

From 24–26 June 2026, eWHORM partner BNITM organised a three-day workshop on Clinical Data Management in Libreville, Gabon. The training brought together data managers, clinical trial investigators, and study coordinators and provided participants with practical knowledge and skills for managing high-quality clinical research data in accordance with internationally recognized standards.

Participants came from across the eWHORM consortium, including clinical trial sites working on onchocerciasis (INRB), loiasis (CERMEL), and mansonellosis (UB), as well as institutions from the CANTAM consortium, including the Fondation Congolaise pour la Recherche Médicale in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, and the Laboratory for Tuberculosis Research at the Biotechnology Centre in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The workshop was delivered by Data Sculpts, an organisation specialising in clinical data management and biostatistics and providing data solutions for clinical trials and public health research in Africa. Over the three days, participants were actively engaged in the training, contributing to a dynamic and interactive learning environment.

The workshop aimed to strengthen partner institutions’ capacity to manage clinical trial data in accordance with internationally recognised standards, including ICH-GCP, while applying established principles of data quality and integrity. Through practical and context-relevant training, participants explored the different stages of the clinical data lifecycle and approaches to developing robust data management processes for clinical research.

Key objectives included:

• Describing and managing the full clinical data lifecycle
• Developing and implementing context-appropriate Data Management Plans (DMPs)
• Applying Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles to clinical data management
• Strengthening understanding of data quality and integrity throughout clinical studies
• Building practical clinical data management capacity among participating institutions

The workshop contributes to eWHORM’s broader efforts to strengthen clinical research capacity across its partner institutions and trial sites. By equipping researchers and research support teams with robust clinical data management skills, the training supports the generation of reliable, high-quality research data and helps strengthen the capacity to conduct clinical trials and public health research across Sub-Saharan Africa.
